When Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus came to be, it was uncertain the direction the social media platform would bring the company. But years later, the platform is at the forefront of virtual reality. More impressively is the technology behind the now-titled Meta Quest 2. Previously priced at $299, it was questionable how the firm could price it so low. And now with an $100 price bump – the firm is not asking for a lot compared to how units were marked years ago.

Of course, there will be new and better iterations to come following the Meta Quest 2. Currently, the accessibility for general consumers is no problem for the peripheral. But, the device is lacking compared to PC-bound units. You can still buy a Link cable to play other titles, but a capable PC is still required nonetheless.

In a new announcement from Games at Connect 2022, Meta officially announced the Meta Quest Pro. The headset is releasing in just a couple weeks priced at $1,499. You can watch the announcement trailer in a video below:

“Meta Quest Pro is the first entry in our new high-end line of devices, and it’s packed with innovative features like high-res sensors for robust mixed reality experiences, crisp LCD displays for sharp visuals, a completely new and sleeker design, plus eye tracking and Natural Facial Expressions to help your avatar reflect you more naturally in VR,” Meta writes in the blog post.

“We believe VR devices will help usher in the next computing platform—becoming as ubiquitous as laptops and tablets are today—and that people will use them in their everyday lives to access the metaverse. With its cutting-edge technologies, Meta Quest Pro represents an important step toward that future. We designed it to expand the possibilities of both VR and mixed reality. And to do that, you need truly innovative hardware.

“Meta Quest Pro is the first-ever device powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ platform, which is optimized for VR to run at 50% more power than Meta Quest 2 with better thermal dissipation, resulting in significantly better performance. Each Meta Quest Pro comes with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and 10 high-res sensors (five inside the headset and five outside) that help enhance a variety of immersive experiences.”
