With videogame movies coming on a rise to the big screen, many of them have unfortunately been getting poorly received as of now and an actual great videogame film still hasn’t became a reality. But for Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts he is attempting to change that with his upcoming Metal Gear film that he has coming.
Previously covered that Vogt-Roberts has teased what may or may not influence the his film. Posting a thread of Metal Gear fan art each day for a month to celebrate Metal Gear Solid‘s 31st Anniversary. Now mentioned by Vogt-Roberts in a recent interview with IGN, the director shows his interests in making a Metroid movie.
In the interview, Vogt-Roberts speaks about his influences from videogames and how there’s still a chance for a good film based on the industry. Mentioning that both Edge of Tomorrow and Snowpiercer are great examples of what videogame-based films should be, even though there’s no relation.
Along with discussing about the impact of games becoming more popular, and how they be came an influence and translating it into the film. Sharing his experience on how Metroid for the SNES affected him as a child. Then later asked if he could possibly make a film based on the series, he responded that he has a pitch for it.
Vogt-Roberts’ film adaptation on Metroid would have Samus Aran alone for most of the movie, similar to the game. Stating that it will “lose everything” when introducing more talking characters to these type of games-based films. Comparing his idea to 2011 Drive, illustrating how silence can create an “intense mood piece” for the film. And as eager as Vogt-Roberts is for the Metal Gear film, he is for Metroid as well, but knowing mostly-silent isn’t a notorious genre for a blockbuster movie, he thinks the film probably won’t happen.
To determine how the Metal Gear film will do whenever it reaches theaters is unknown, but seeing how the film will be received could determine if we might actually get the film based on Nintendo’s sci-fi platformer. If the film proves that videogame movies aren’t impossible to be great, then we can expect to see more videogame films in the future.
