Microsoft Acquisition Plans Continue To Grow Until Xbox Finds A New Release “Every Quarter”, Xbox Game Studios’ Matt Booty Shares

Although Xbox is still working on shipping its first-party releases in the coming years, Microsoft is vocal to continue to pour resources into its gaming division and further push the standard within the industry. Most recently, Microsoft CEO in a discussion with Xbox head Phil Spencer disclosed that the company is “all-in on gaming” for the foreseeable future.

However, that is not where it ends. With the inception of Xbox Game Studios to rebrand the standard for Xbox internal developers, Microsoft has continued to offer valuable teams new opportunity as an Xbox team. With the purchase of Double Fine Productions back in 2019 followed by the fulfilling of Bethesda/Zenimax Media this spring, Xbox is suiting up with a barrel full of talent.

In a new statement from Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty, the plans for acquisitions are still yet to cease as he explains potential buys to continue until Microsoft has a new release every quarter, he shares in a press release transcribed by Video Game Chronicles.

First and foremost, we are committed to building a diverse collection of studios that deliver a predictable pipeline of high-quality games. We’re committed to creating games that generate excitement, anticipation, and engagement with our fans, and we’re doing that in a few ways. First, we continue to invest in the studios behind our tentpole franchises,” he said, referencing Halo from 343, Forza from Turn 10 and Sea of Thieves from Rare.

Second, we are growing our studios organisation through acquisition. We use a filter of ‘people, teams and ideas’ to keep us disciplined. People that we have relationships with, teams who have delivered games through both success and have seen some adversity, and studios that have a proven track record of new ideas.

The support that we get from the company has enabled us to acquire smaller studios like Tim Schaefer’s Double Fine, mid-size studios like Obsidian, and of course, industry giants like Bethesda. Finally, we work with independent studios to bring first-party exclusives to Xbox. Games like Ori and the Will of the Wisps from Moon Studios and Tell Me Why from Dontnod.

Of course, the most notable segment of the statement from Matt Booty is his expression to further fuel Microsoft’s release strategy to the extent that Xbox Game Studios “get to a point of releasing a new game every quarter.” Already, Spencer referenced more acquisitions in favor to support a growing single-player resumé and to also benefit Xbox Game Pass in the long-run also.

Booty continues, “Games take up to four or five years to make, and the reality is that not every project we start will make it to launch. But if you add all that up, that’s how we’ve gotten to our state today, with two dozen studios making games across a variety of genres. And we know that a thriving entertainment service needs a consistent and exciting flow of new content. So our portfolio will continue to grow as our service grows.”

In the past, Spencer also reiterated when speaking with gamesindustry.biz that Microsoft is still adamant in further investing in first-party. But, the noteworthy statement from Spencer later on comes in reference to the impressive progress from Xbox Game Studios in terms to its upcoming RPGs. You can read the full report by heading here.
