Just over a month ago this past September, Microsoft after a string of leaks for the then-codenamed Project Lockhart console announced the upcoming, entry-level console to be the Xbox Series S. While many already saw the announcement coming from a mile away for months already, how the firm handled the reveal slipping through its fingers was admired.
Upon learning that the new system is a weaker unit for sure, countless followers did not anticipate the next-generation console to be so small. The same can also be said for the price – that being $299 for the system. Combing that together while still maintaining the new console cycle identity is one worth congratulating Microsoft on accomplishing.
The company has told the new system to be its intermediate unit for those not interested towards investing the $499 for an Xbox Series X. Either those looking for a cheaper price point or a form of entry onto the Xbox ecosystem, the Xbox Series S is a unique approach for Microsoft. But looking ahead for both systems, Microsoft is expecting the latter system to outperform its sibling.
When speaking to Kotaku, Xbox division lead Phil Spenser told the publication that Microsoft is targeting the Xbox Series S to exceed unit sales of the Xbox Series X. When discussing the launch for the duo, he tells both will sell out immediately.
I think we’ll sell every unit of both of them that we can deliver. I think demand is just going to outstrip supply of pre-orders. For us and PlayStation, I think that the manufacturing supply chain is going to dictate [market] share more than anything else.
I think, over the generation, our expectation would be that price really matters and that you would see the Series S sell more.
While it is fact that Xbox Series X is marginally better than the Xbox Series S in the term of hardware horsepower, the cost-efficient system has a price advantage. And give the 3:1 ratio in GPU teraflops, the Series S is also said to still offer 60 frames per second with even chances of some properties to perform at even 120 frames per second also.
Looking ahead, Phil Spencer also went to disclose Microsoft’s ambitions following the Xbox Series X|S by sharing the firm will reiterate on the consoles leading forward. You can read the full report by heading here.
