With Microsoft being accustomed to supporting the addition of backwards compatibility for a good chunk of this generation on Xbox One, it came as a surprise when the firm revealed to be halting operations for more titles to be added to the list from prior generations. The company shared that bridging more games to the newer system would be halted in anticipation for the approaching new console so the entries we currently enjoy would be there when the new hardware launches.
If you recall from a previous update on the upcoming Xbox Series X, Microsoft went to share that backwards compatibility would be enroute for the next-generation system. But, the company did so by sharing that each supported title will be optimized through its hardware to support HDR without needing additional input from the game’s respected development team.
Now today, Microsoft has returned to discuss more about backwards compatibility. The firm now shares that there are “thousands” of titles being primed for the Xbox Series X lather this holiday season. Microsoft shares this when telling that the tests run on titles for the coming system has been exceeding expectations.
With more than 100,000 hours of play testing already completed, thousands of games are already playable on Xbox Series X today, from the biggest blockbusters to cult classics and fan favorites. Many of us in Team Xbox play on the Xbox Series X daily as our primary console and switching between generations is seamless. By the time we launch this holiday, the team will have spent well over 200,000 hours ensuring your game library is ready for you to jump in immediately.

While we are aware of some aspects of what this new iteration of backwards compatibility can produce, there are new details that have been spared that were not told previously. One being that thanks to the overwhelming power for the Xbox Series X, some titles have experienced framerates that were not seen on its original hardware.
Microsoft also emphasizes that this is implemented through raw hardware with no boost mode or other implementations to increase performance. With that being said, load times are also stated to be expecting drastically less wait time thanks to the new capabilities on the next-generation unit.
Another addition is that Quick Resume will be supported for backwards compatible titles now. While we have experienced the feature for Xbox One titles, prior generation games were faced with reloading each time you turn off your console. “Quick Resume enables players to resume exactly where they left off, across multiple titles, ensuring gamers can get right back to the fun in an instant.”
