For many that are generally up to date on the current gaming knowabouts, the next-generation consoles are just under a dozen weeks away from releasing. With the Xbox Series X slated to ship sometime this November, it is also suggested that Sony’s PlayStation 5 will launch sometime during that same release window.

And as many would presume from the technological advancements of the two coming systems, players are looking as to what differentiates the newer models from what is currently available. Given that the appearance of games are illustrated to be improved significantly in both resolution as well as performance, both firms are looking elsewhere on how to expand the experience. One being Sony’s 3D audio implementation to further emulate what could be expected from reality as sound travels through different settings.

But little do people know – Microsoft is also working on its own initiative similar to what can be found on PlayStation 5. Codenamed ‘Project Triton’, the firm is actually through its research branch is discovering new ways to extract audio of real-time situations and portray that in virtual worlds. In a new video, Microsoft shares the progress on where it stands for the next-generation feature, which you can watch in the video below:

“We present the first wave-based interactive system for practical rendering of global sound propagation effects including diffraction, in complex game and VR scenes with moving directional sources and listeners,” the synapse for the video reads. For a broader term as for how this new implementation operates, think of it as raytracing for audio. Rather than noise coming directly from a source, i.e. a person, the engine would propel the noise as it bounces off walls and other objects depending on the layout of the composition.

Presented in the video, the directivity for how audio is projected into the game plays a major role is sounding authentic. When off, the audio sounds indifferent no matter what direction the source is aimed. But that changes once activated and adds a larger scope to the presentation. The same is also said for reflections as it pronounces more identifying sounds in the audio when turned on also.

While Project Triton is found to be unique to the next-generation of Xbox, Microsoft is also shipping reiterations of its platforms on all fronts. That being the UI interface we are familiar with, Microsoft shared just some of what can be expected when it arrives later on on console, PC, and mobile.
