Mojang Rebrands To Mojang Studios Following 11th Birthday For Minecraft

Minecraft developer Mojang since its founding over a decade ago has come to show a world-changing approach to the gaming market with its notorious blocky world builder and expand on that basis to become a global phenomenon. And now reaching eleven years since the initial debut of Minecraft, the Swedish studio shares to be looking ahead with a new name for its operation.

In a new blog post from the studio, Mojang announces that the titling will now be ‘Mojang Studios’. Thomas Wiborgh, now-Mojang Studios’ Head of Creative Communications shared that the rebranding technically not necessary since many are familiar with the developer already, but shared the team as a whole wanted to reinvent itself now that the studio is some unrecognizable to itself from when the team first started.

From our humble beginnings in Stockholm, we are entering the 20’s as a multi-title, multi-location company. Following Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons, we’re planning a feature film, preparing an epic live show, and playing with ideas for brand new games.

There are also several studios around the world, all part of Mojang. Which, in a stroke of genius, inspired our new name… *drumroll and birthday alarm blare*… Mojang Studios.

With a new name and even more a new look with the introduction of a new logo, Wilborgh tells that this change is only the first step for the newly envisioned Mojang Studios. Although the team already shared that there are talks of a film & “epic live show” planned for the coming future, the next project ahead of Mojang is being teased within the trailer of rebranding.

While the trailer might come to be vague to understand as Wilborgh puts it, the team tries to project the implications through the ‘Mojangs’ that are used to create the logo. Although the team does discuss of new projects underway at the Swedish team, the Mojangs themselves are shared to help open more opportunity for Minecraft. “They [Mojangs] test and tinker, endlessly explore, and help us discover new corners of the Minecraft universe.”

On a side note, on interesting thing to take from the new announcement is the definition of Mojang. While not a definitive word in the English language, Mojang Studios tells that the word translates to ‘gadget’ in Swedish. That’s something I definitely didn’t know until today.

Do you have an idea on where to decipher the Mojangs?
