Although the idea of video game films continues to be a mixed bag for avid film viewers, there is a level of excitement when some of the largest IPs are said to be the main focus for the next production. One instance is Mortal Kombat: when the motion picture was first announced, it was told the movie would embrace a R-rating as fatalities are to be the show piece for the production.

Despite lacking in box office performance, Warner Media executives helm the film to be a “top asset” from HBO Max with its performance on the streaming service. In a later report by Business Insider, it is revealed that Mortal Kombat was the most successful release on HBO Max for opening weekend for over 3.8 million households. The record overtakes Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, The Matrix Resurrections, and Space Jam: A New Legacy.

In a recent story by Deadline, Mortal Kombat 2 is said to welcome Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater to work on the script for the coming sequel. As of the report, there is no further details including additional casting or arrangements for those working behind the scenes as of yet.

So far, Mortal Kombat as a franchise has been reported to already net Sub Zero actor Joe Taslim for four more related projects for the character. In an interview with Variety he expressed his tied childhood to the video game franchise and appreciating the opportunity to obtain the role he portrays in the motion picture.

Regarding other sequel film news, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is getting a follow-up already. Ahead of the second entry arriving to theaters in April, Paramount has announced a third film is slated for the franchise. Additionally, Knuckles the Echidna is receiving a Paramount+ show as well.
