This past November stood as a monumental moment for the Need for Speed series as its latest entry Need of Speed Heat shipped at that time. While it surely is not anything new to see a new installment arrive for the recognized racing series, Heat had a lot on its shoulders in commemoration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary alongside being the successor to the lesser received Need for Speed Payback.

But despite what obstacles stood in its way, Need for Speed Heat released to be a new entry that surely went noted as much needed breath of fresh air. While incorporating elements that is identified with the series, Heat elaborates on that foundation to lay a new sheet of tarmac for titles to come.

But following the release, we have seen little to any major additions to the core game. But according to Criterion Games, the team now helming the Need for Speed series, Heat is expecting cross-platform play to be arriving starting tomorrow.

At Criterion, we’ve always believed that games are better with friends. We don’t want your platform of choice to be a barrier for that experience. So we’re thrilled to let you all know that on June 9, Need for Speed Heat will be the first EA title to offer cross-play, meaning that players – regardless of their platform – can jump into Palm City together as one, united community.

Matt Webster, Criterion Games’ General Manager

The current Need for Speed Heat will mark the first entry in the entirety of the series to be receiving cross-play. Even more, this might be one of the few releases from Electronic Arts’ repertoire to be tasked with the feature as well. While it is certainly a rare and unusual addition to the platform boundary-breaking implementation, it surely is welcomed.

Atop of supported versions to be bridged together, Criterion Games also unveils that Need for Speed Heat will also be making its debut for EA Access/Origin Access the following coming Tuesday, June 16. “Need for Speed Heat drops into the EA Access and Origin Access Basic Vault*, giving all subscribers the opportunity to enter Palm City.”

The British studio in the same blog post also disclosed to be working on its first Need for Speed entry after being handed the keys back to the series. You can read the full report by heading here.
