Despite the long wait, it was only two years prior that Square Enix decided to officially announce Final Fantasy XVI. Although the newest installment has still yet to release, you have to understand the state of development at the time. Unveiled during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, shipping AAA projects was a hurdle to say the least. Even work on the game prolonged its release at the time.
Disregarding the setbacks thanks to the state of the world, Square Enix was still on top of development better than most firms at the time. Shortly after the announcement, it was said the ‘base development’ for Final Fantasy XVI was completed as it focused on other related content and proper bug fixing. This later led to a summer 2023 release window for the game being shared later on this past June.
Now in a new PlayStation 5 promo from Sony Interactive Entertainment, it is relieved new information on where the game stands following its release. Already, we know the game is to launch first on PlayStation 5. In the video, that will only be the case for six months at the earliest. You can watch the video in the tweet below:
“Final Fantasy XVI anticipated summer 2023 [for its release date],” the subtitle in the video reads. “PS5 exclusive for six months.” Clearly, Sony Interactive Entertainment & Square Enix worked together yet another marketing arrangement for the next major installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. However, six months is hardly a wait compared to a year or even an indefinite release for other platforms.
On the other hand, this could inevitably change. Back during CES in early 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment uploaded a similar video for featured releases at the time. But that was short lived as the PlayStation firm went on to hammer down the listings for the titles in the video. You can read the full report by heading here.
