While the Nintendo Switch has and continues to be on a trajectory to becoming the most-sold console of all-time, the hybrid system has moved impressive numbers more than half a decade later in 2023. One of the biggest marvels of this year is the 18+ million units for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which was recorded at the start of August.
Additionally, as of May 2023 Nintendo Switch has issued more than 125 million systems were sold. As for its top-selling games, the #1 spot remains to be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition at over 53 million units. Noted, with the recent milestone from the The Legend of Zelda, it will place #8 on the list overtaking both New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe & Ring Fit Adventure.
Now a new record has been marked for Nintendo Switch this week. In a market report from gamesindustry.biz, the Nintendo Wii’s standing record of sold units has now been toppled by the Nintendo Switch. “US lifetime sales of Switch hardware finally surpassed those of Wii in the US market during July 2023,” the piece reads. And the system is less than a million from outpacing Xbox 360 and five million for the PlayStation 2 in United States unit sales.
Already, it was a major achievement when Nintendo Switch outperformed current competitors previously. In that, the Nintendo Switch outsold PlayStation 4 U.S. sales back in May 2022. Even more, overall Xbox One lifetime sales were exceeded as well in December 2019. However, Nintendo has outperformed the former Wii in other respects previously.
In a surprising report back in February 2022, it was recorded that the sales for first-party releases – the system that had Wii Sports – was officially deplatformed by the Nintendo Switch officially. You can read the full report by heading here.
