Now that more than a month passed since the release of the PlayStation 5 alongside its competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S, it is time to reflect on the performance on next-generation consoles in the market reception. For the Xbox company, Microsoft revealed a week following its release that the newest iterations that shipped resulted in the most successful launch for the history of Xbox.
Similarly, Sony Interactive Entertainment also gave a statement on that. In an interview with Russian news agency TASS, PlayStation lead Jim Ryan disclosed that all prepared units are already allocated to the market. “Everything is sold. Absolutely everything is sold,” Ryan touts in response to the PlayStation 5’s launch week.
But while both systems are received in glowing response from the respected firms, the actual market response tells a different story. Now according to NPD group’s Mat Piscatella, the PlayStation 5 walks away with the largest launch month in the history of the United States – dismantling the record previously held by the PlayStation 4 in November 2013.
In the same thread, Piscatella goes on to mention that while Sony takes the cake for the most consumer spending for the month of November with the PlayStation 5’s release, the Nintendo Switch is still helmed at the number one spot for most sold units. Additionally, he informs that the Nintendo Switch sits at its twenty-fourth consecutive month as the most sold device which began in November 2018.
It was just back in October two months to date that Piscatella predicted that the Nintendo Switch would outsell both next-generation systems for this holiday. And now that it is recorded the handheld hybrid is outperforming the very successful PlayStation 5, it will remain ahead for the remainder of the consumer-driven timeframe.
