The initial PlayStation 2 exclusive Ōkami which launched back in 2006 has been recognized as one of the most memorable titles to release at the time closing out the generation as new hardware was on the horizon with the PlayStation 3 later that Fall. And while the game has received numerous ports to other platforms since then (Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch), fans of the title looked towards a potential return of the series with a direct sequel.
Speaking on follow-up titles, there was a “sequel” that released back in 2011 for the Nintendo DS, but is ranked as a spiritual successor, not a succeeding installment. Although the project did get published under Capcom alike the previous 2006 game, Ōkamiden however did not have Kamiya’s involvement during the title’s development.
Dating to this week, Hidki Kamiya alongside former Ghostwire Tokyo Director Ikumi Nakamura announces the return of Ōkami with the two’s shared excitement to be creating the long-awaited sequel for the action-adventure title.
Okami is going to be back! We want to make Okami sequel and fans are looking forward to it too. You guys want to see Kamiya’s Okami again, right, everyone? I want to work on it too! 大神をまた作りたい私たちです。🙏😊@CapcomUSA_ @OKAMI_CAP pic.twitter.com/bLwuGnTew1

Upon Nakamura’s statement with Kamiya, she does suggest that she would “like to work on it too,” giving the implication that the game has yet to properly get in motion for development. But given the circumstance that she would abruptly leave Tango Gameworks following the announcement of the next generation survival horror, this is a well-explained reason for her actions.
For more background on Nakamura’s involvement with the teased sequel, she previously worked on Kamiya’s 2006 title as a environmental artist creating background landscapes for the game.
Would you play an Ōkami sequel if the project goes into full affect?
