In October, Nintendo revealed they would be discontinuing the online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U sometime in 2024. Today, it was announced that online services will officially shut down for both of the consoles on April 8, 2024, at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET.

These changes will apply to: New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, Wii U Deluxe, and Wii U Basic.

On a positive note for those who like to use StreetPass on the 3DS, it will still be available since that uses local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems. Until March 11, 2024, you can merge your unused Nintendo eShop balance to your Nintendo Account, so that it can be used on Nintendo Switch,
