Thumper is a VR game launching later this year for Playstation 4 with Playstation VR support, as well as Steam, the latter of  which will be playable through the Oculus Rift, or it can simply be played with the controller if you please. The developers told me that it was originally planned to just be a straight controller game, but later ported it to VR and were pleased at how well it worked. This was my first time ever using VR, so needless to say I was quite excited to try it out.
I played the game using the PSVR, and the immersion that was added to the game was almost essential to fully enjoy the experience.  The concept of Thumper is simple, you play as a space beetle flying along a roller coaster like track, while having to perform quick time actions to a rhythm that progressively gets faster as the game goes on. This can prove quite challenging, and I found myself dying quite a few times on the later stages. The benefit of this is that replaying the stage will now allow you to correct your mistakes as you learn to memorize the specific rhythm that it throws at you.
The added VR immersion makes this all the more exciting, you can look around and see different parts of the track approaching, and the fear that you might not know what is coming makes it all the more intense. The unique art style also adds to the experience, and it’s one that I’ve heard people compared to “being on an acid trip”.  The beauty of Thumper is in it’s simplicity, and I think I feel that it will be a great entry point for new users and those curious of VR.
