Another game I’ve visited Serenity Forge at PAX West this year is The King’s Bird. For one reason, it reminds me a lot of another game I’ve played, but they changed it entirely and I had to get in on this.
Instead of the standard platforming many indies do, The King’s Bird takes it to the next level with the use of flight and gliding to primarily traverse through the game’s levels. Momentum platforming is frustrating yet fun to play, and also watch.
The King’s Bird starts with you being released into a world that was hidden by the city’s tyrant. After the main cage that kept the city safe has fallen, you must go out and find the King’s Bird and bring order back to the once good city. While traversing through the forgotten worlds, you will discover the truth of your freedom by jumping, dashing and gliding. Coming along secrets of the old and desolate secrets from these ruined kingdoms.
After seeing the game for myself I went straight to the questions with Andy Schmitt, a Technical Producer at Serenity Forge.
- First, why give the protagonist the ability to fly?
Before the story was even created for the game, flying was a primary mechanic that they wanted to use for the player. But perfecting it was another story. Precision flying was their goal and took several attempts to bring what we see now.
2.  Is flying the only ability that the protagonist has?
The game has no other player progression besides the obstacle to fly. Difficulty will increase as you play through the story.
3. What’s the inspiration for the world created for the game?
The idea of mixing cultures with birds. Basing the ideology of allowing outsiders in or not. To experiment with a world you’ve been caged out of and having your first experience in it. Through the light or the dark of the world.
4. How did the visuals for the worlds come to be?
Each world is made up of layers of colors. Nice and bold. Each layer is its own color and that’s what gives it depth.
As of yet, there’s release date for when The King’s Bird will be available or any platforms it will be available for. Stay tuned to Rectifygaming.com for more news on when it will be available.
