PAX West 2019: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre Relieves The Broodiness Of The Demonic Underworld

In general with the overall stigma of Hell and its decaying perdition that defines the religious underworld, there is a sinister overtone that’s truly distinct with the nocturnal doom while in contrast from the heavens above Earth’s surface. With media that encaptures said damnation, the content that is infused with Hell typically piles onto the broodiness that suits the depths of the Earth’s core.

However, this connotation that many would define the demonic underworld is broken thanks to Big Way Games’ Big Drunk Satanic Massacre. Introducing Satan’s spawn Lucifer, or preferably Lou, after three decades of Hell’s exploitation that mankind has taken advantage of the inhabitants within Hell’s gates decides to return the favor by rebelling against the overtaking humans.

Drawing me to approach this title at PAX West this week is the over-the-top parodying that the developer has incorporated that mocks popular entertainment references from video games to content creators and even including varying memes that have surfaced throughout the internet. Posing the main antagonist with a clown given the title “Big Wac” accompanied with an upside down ‘M’ on his chest, the studio does not hide to jab at current brands or personalities.

Gameplay for Lou’s blood-filled journey poses the perspective as a top-down shooter following Satan’s son himself as he shoots his way through hordes of diverse & demonic enemies over a cast of unique locations that are set in the Hellish underground. His arsenal is constructed of six different weapons that the player can vary from to keep the gameplay fresh as different antagonizing forces will require separate firepower to fend off.

Rotating from his starting revolver to the boom stick shot gun, assault rifle, flamethrower, rocket launcher, and even a mocked version of the notorious demon exterminating BFG. However, the weapon count technically doubles as each firearm is also equipped with a alternative fire option that players can use to get that extra kick out of each weapon.

That’s only the half of it as Lou is also met with an handful of different abilities that he can utilize when in the heat of every firefight. Like his dash ability which is self-explanatory, but when near enemies can inflict some harm. As well as naming some of the few pick-ups that you will find on your massacre naming the minions that will assist in your killing spree or the raining hellfire that can damage those in proximity. And of course there is an ultimate move that the player can take advantage of with the hardest of enemies using Lou’s Rage which he triggers by shooting a beam of light directly from his eyes.

Through my demo of the game, I experienced the title to be quite challenging as more of the enemies continued to pile on for me. Which did prolong the demo for sometime, but can be simmered down once getting a proper grasp of the control scheme and balancing between the different weapons at your disposal. Especially the boss battles that you will be met with at the end of each location, the beefed up enemy takes a lot of planning and milk to properly overthrow to advance to the next segment of the game.

BDSM goes into full swing with the content that it presents itself with ranging from the cutscenes that will buffer between locations as well as the imagery that is seen while on your killing spree. So the developer felt the need to include different filter settings depending on the player’s preference. Firstly with the “BDSM” option which will unleash all explicit content that comes with the base game following by the “Pixelated” option that censors all graphic and inappropriate content with a titular blanket of blurring pixels. And a third mode that partnered UberStrategist Senior Director Ted Brockwood jokingly defined as the “American” option which completely washes said explicit images from sexual props to guns or even just simply painting an ‘X’ over the reference entirely.

Big Drunk Satanic Massacre will be available later in September for PC and consoles. For those interested, you can wishlist the game on Steam by going here.
