Phil Spencer Clarifies That Microsoft’s Ambitions For Xbox Series X Is In favor For Framerate Over Resolution

While the current generation of console hardware slowly closes as the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox is slated to arrive this coming holiday season, the debate revolving around which aspect should be prioritized surfaces again: resolution or framerate. While we have witnessed a growing increase in better looking titles and projects in each console entry for the past few decades, the current lineup have truly pushed the barriers to what we would expect from the likes of film and television.

I’m talking about the slow inching towards 4K resolution. For about half a decade, the popularity of 4K resolution has been pushed on the market as you would see in stores and just in the past year finally stretched to a more affordable approach. And in the midst of that, video games have also tackled the same as we have seen with the then-upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Yes, PC has been well acquainted to this peripheral for a while prior, but to a general market like the prominent consoles we are accustomed to is a reach that are still adapting to. Since the debut of the more powerful iterations for this generation’s console systems, 4K has been tossed around quite a bit. The advertised resolution of 3840×2160 is what AAA projects strive for, and it illustrates that the manufacturers stand behind this principal, at least for the hardware we play as of now.

However, it looks that Microsoft is changing their position on the topic according to a recent interview. Xbox head Phil Spencer shared when talking to Stevivor that he favors better frames per second for software over the amount of pixels accounted for the resolution output.

The feel of the games [is] definitely something that we wanted to have more focus on, not just throwing more pixels up on the screen.

Although this comes as news regarding the upcoming Xbox Series X as Spencer lists his ambitions regarding the newer system, Spencer has been a supporter for smoother performance since his inauguration to leading Xbox. Spencer goes on to clarify that Microsoft’s intentions for developers were to provide the necessities to pursue either resolution or performance; even applying to the Xbox 360.

“We want to give developers the tools to go try things that they want to go try on any of the hardware platforms and capability can be there for them to go try things.” Even more, Spencer shares to acknowledge titles now lacking well-optimized performance and wants to really reduce this trait when new systems arrive later on.

Do you agree with Phil Spencer’s stance on framerate over resolution?
