Even months later when reflecting on the announcement made this past September, it is still pure insanity to process Microsoft’s plans to acquire Zenimax Media. Not only that, but also take ownership of Bethesda and the connected network of teams like Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, and Arkane Studios to name a few is beyond what many could perceive.
While the acquisition alongside the projected $7.5 billion is not scheduled to fully process until later in 2021, Microsoft is already very ambitious on what is the future now with Bethesda being part of Xbox Game Studios. For starters, Xbox boss Phil Spencer is already confident that Microsoft will be able to recoup its planned spendings for Bethesda thanks to the sheer amount of talent and coming released currently in development – even if it shipped on native hardware.
But now in a new interview to end 2020 this past week, Phil Spencer once again speaks on the future of Xbox Game Studios in regards to role-playing games. In that, he elaborates with Larry Hyrb that the scope looking forward for RPGs are “massive” for coming first-party projects.
When I think about our RPG capabilities with Obsidian, with InXile, with the work Playground is now – which is now out there with Fable obviously, with what Bethesda can do – it’s massive capability. I think about our FPS capabilities with id and obviously 343 and the work we can do. It doubles the size of our first-party studios when Bethesda joined which is pretty amazing.
As you can gather from Spencer’s statement, he also references the first-person shooter genre as Bethesda also taps into that realm as well with id Software. Even more, Machinegames responsible for the Wolfenstein franchise is another noted developer worth mentioning for the category of games. So looking forward, 343 Industries with Halo is only the surface of what is to come.
Looking ahead for Xbox Game Studios now twice in size with Bethesda added to the roster, Microsoft is planning to emphasize on its platform more as time proceeds. While its main goal is to offer games for all platforms accessible, Microsoft CFO Tim Stewart did comment that Xbox’s ecosystem of platforms will be the definitive place to experience these coming projects.
