The last few weeks concerning Japanese game studio PlatinumGames have revolved around the team’s ambitions to become self-reliant on developing as well as publishing their created properties in the future. Most recently, the developer debuted a new initiative introducing four new titles that will come from this uprising for independence: The Wonderful 101: Remastered being the first to being announced.
However, the team also looks towards more anticipated franchises that they have developed previously. One series mentioned being the billboard Bayonetta which debuted on Sega back in 2009. The IP was then handed over to Nintendo with the release of the second titular installment and the upcoming third entry for the hack and slash.
When talking to IGN Japan earlier this month, PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba to have interest in self-publishing the series. However, Inaba quickly went to clarify that this news is surely a “desire” rather than a devoted benchmark the team wishes to reach in the future. Which comes to be understandable seeing that the process alone for self-publishing surely is a detour from achieving what could be done if having a publisher at hand.
The team has resorted to crowdfunding with the latest project to port 2013’s The Wonderful 101 to current hardware. But Inaba does again clarify that if the team were to resort in Kickstarter for Bayonetta, the budget listed for the campaign’s goal would be much higher than what was initially asked earlier this month.
Another obstacle that PlatinumGames would be facing when attempting to self-publish Bayonetta is property ownership. Currently, the IP is in the hands of a 50/50 split between Sega and Nintendo. So disputing to claim ownership of the series would also be another venture alone atop of approaching a realistic budget for the game too.
In this discussion of exterior ownership of PlatinumGames intellectual properties, the developer shares to also have interest in porting 2019’s Astral Chain to other systems as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
