Sony continues to thrive with console sales as the PlayStation 5 hits a new milestone despite failing to meet expectations for its recent quarterly results. The PlayStation 5 has now reached 59 million in sales while shipping 20.8 million PS5 consoles during the last fiscal year that ended March 31, 2024.
The initial goal for Sony was to ship 25 million units in the fiscal year but revised its goal to 21 million in February and still fell short. A positive sign for the PlayStation 5 is that it’s in line with the PlayStation 4 during the same point in its life where it had 60 million sales.
For the current fiscal year, Sony expects to sell 18 million units and realize gaming sales will decrease during this timeframe as they have no major existing franchise games coming. Sometime this year the PS5 Pro is expected to release as well, but since that is just a more powerful console it may not help overall sales numbers. It is unknown if Sony will plan price cuts around the holiday again.
Helldivers 2 Helped PlayStation Sales
There is no doubt that Helldivers 2 is PlayStation’s biggest launch of 2024. In Sony’s financial results, it was revealed Helldviers 2 is the fastest-selling game for PlayStation reaching 12 million sales across PC and PS5 in the first 12 weeks. This beats God of War Ragnarok which sold 11 million units in 10 weeks on PS5.
