PlayStation forms new first-party studio Dark Outlaw Games

PlayStation has officially formed another first-party studio, Dark Outlaw Games with former Treyarch co-studio head, Jason Blundell. The former Call of Duty executive was once in charge of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode before he left Activision in 2020.

Blundell went on to co-found Deviation Games which never got to debut its original IP project that would’ve been an exclusive for PlayStation. The brief studio closed in March of 2024.

It was revealed in an interview with Jeff Gertsmann, that Dark Outlaw Games is already staffing up and says more will be shared on the first project in the future.

Here are some quotes from the YouTube Interview thanks to VGC:

“I’ve had the amazing opportunity to create a new studio within PlayStation Studios for Sony.”

“The studio is called Dark Outlaw. We’ve been working away in the shadows for a while, when we’ve got something to talk about we’ll step out into the light.”

“It’s such a privilege to be able to do it with Sony as a new first-party studio, Sony doesn’t start up first-party studios all the time, so to have that privilege is humbling.”

There were no indications of what this game will be. However, it does come at an interesting time as a job posting was recently discovered for a new live service game at PlayStation. The listing states it’s for a game aiming to be competitive.

With how Concord ended up being after Sony invested millions into that project, we assume this time around they will be more careful with their next big live-service title.
