When it comes to publishers & even platform holders, increased revenue has continued to be a driving factor for the industry alike any market. From the likes of Microsoft & Sony, both firms are eagerly investing in more advertising. We’ve seen this in the past with the Las Vegas Sphere last year in 2023. In one report, it was identified that both are looking for new ways to bring advertisements to its consoles as well.
Additionally, we are also seeing these in video games as well. While not entirely embraced, select titles already do this using real-world brands like sports & racing titles. However, dynamic advertisements are in the works as well. From Ubisoft, the publisher alongside Anzu revealed progress on this effort with Trackmania to feature new advertisements in games.
Over on PlayStation, it appeared that advertisements were coming to the platform on PlayStation 5’s home screen. On Reddit, it was reported that the feature came in a new update which featured video footage and other related images for the respected property. Howbeit, PlayStation did signify this to be a “technical error” which has since then been fixed.
Notably, the PlayStation Store has faced shortcomings with its listings in the past. Upon release, the PlayStation 5 Store did find a slew of titles that were improperly listed or just absent from select categories. Speaking to Rectify Gaming, GamePitt did elaborate that much of these problems could be resolved if Sony was active on the matter.
Whether or not PlayStation plans to explore advertising on its core platform has still yet to be denounced by Sony as of yet. Although this issue was resolved, if it were to be fully implemented would be unavoidable for users. @alfredobofa on X illustrates this as disabling features does not remove the advertisements. Similarly, Xbox already features ads on its dashboard including select instances of pop-ups when booting the console.
Are you surprised by this new instance on PlayStation?
