When shopping for an Oculus headset, one of the convincing factors into pickup the peripheral from the Facebook-owned company is in part by Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series. The three-episode story follows the journey of a smuggler who swiftly gets an apprenticeship with the Dark Lord and unravels more context to the world of George Lucas’ film franchise.
Capturing the essence of lightsaber battles and the true experience of learning how to tame the Force, the series stand out to be one of the most unique releases the Oculus Store. Even more, the debut of the series also introduced the then-upcoming wireless Oculus Quest as well. However, the ILMxLAB-developed title will be embarking on a new journey outside of Oculus’ platform in a new announcement today.
Announced today on May the Fourth, the annual Star Wars celebratory holiday, ILMxLAB has announced that Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series will be releasing with a PlayStation VR version later this year. The game will ship with all three portions of the game alongside Lightsaber Dojos the announcement shares.
Studio Executive Creative Producer Mark S. Miller shares his history with Star Wars previously working at Lucasfilm Story Group to concoct plots for a new entry for the growing cinematic franchise. But in 2016, when ILMxLAB formed, the team began discussing how to incorporate a virtual reality experience into the canon of the titular film series.
“We pushed ourselves every day to combine high quality visuals, sound and compelling interactivity in a way not previously attempted or achieved in the VR space. To do this, we built a team of folks with varied storytelling backgrounds from film, games, and animation, brought on key collaborators like ClutchPlay, and leveraged Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. This, along with the help of Writer and Executive Producer David S. Goyer, helped to find our path for the project.”
Since the game’s complete release, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series went on to receive noteworthy recognition for the three-part experience. Namely, the game was nominated for an Emmy for “Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Media” last year in 2019.
