Sony Interactive Entertainment witnessing Microsoft’s attempt to welcome televised entertainment onto the Xbox platform could be what influenced Sony towards the creation of PlayStation Vue. Unsure of the direct source to creating the platform, it was known that the company did, however, create a unique new platform to bring on demand television with an affordable service for PlayStation users to cut the cable.
Although the subscription showed to be an innovative and successful alternative to simply streaming through the user’s respected provider as Xbox owners can do, PlayStation Vue since its debut in 2015 was met with steady increases in pricing for the services among a decline in supplied networks that were initially available on the platform.
This was primarily due to the fact of pricy network agreements and the ongoing competition between different service providers, Sony Interactive Entertainment Deputy President John Kodera shares today.
Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected. Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.
While users on PlayStation 4 can still purchase and view television & movies through the PlayStation Store, the use of PlayStation Vue will soon be a thing of the past as the final day for the use of the service has been revealed for January 30 next year. Entertainment can also be sourced for streaming through the host of available apps like Hulu, HBO Go, and Netflix.
Seeing the resources that went towards creating a different platform to receive your daily dose of televised entertainment, it is only reassuring that more will be disposed towards the next generation now that Sony Interactive Entertainment will redirect full focus towards the gaming aspect once again.
Did you use PlayStation Vue since it released earlier in the generation cycle?
