Ever wanted to play a game as a Pigeon? Well, Team17 and Glee-Cheese Studio are coming out with Headbangers: Rhythm Royale that puts the player into the perspective of a Pigeon. It brings a new style of battle royale to the table that is purely rhythm based and you compete against 29 other Pigeons to become the last one standing.

We were invited to get hands-on with Headbangers: Rhythm Royale for a brief gaming session. The basis of the game is to compete against opponents in mind-bending musical minigames. You better hope your memory skills are good for this game is all I’ll have to say.

My playthrough was against bots since obviously there was no way to find a full match of 30 regular people. There are four round to play through and as you get further along your memory skills get challenged even harder. A commander provides instructions to what the beat you have to make is and then you’ll have to remember the exact keys that made such noise.

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale features 23 minigames at launch. Minigames will test your memory, rhythm, reflexes, reaction time and that will either create a fun or frustrating time depending what minigames you prefer. Me personally I struggled with the minigame where you have to whac-a-mole and remember when each one pops up.

Customization & Progression

What’s important to games these days is the ability to progress through a ‘career’ system and earn new items to personalize your character. Headbangers seems to already nail down that aspect with having a leveling system where you’ll earn new costumes such as ‘Super Pigeon Man’.

You’ll be able to earn ‘Breadcrumbs’ from challenges as a currency to unlock clothes for your Pigeon. It’s great to see the option of earning cosmetic items in a game besides via microtransactions.

How does the gameplay feel? I really think this game is as simple as it can get. You aren’t doing anything super complicated and just are doing what the game is telling you to do.

Overall, Headbangers: Rhythm Royale has the potential to be another hit in the Content Creation community bringing entertainment to many streams in the future. What someone told me was that Headbangers is Fall Guys meets PaRappa the Rapper and I couldn’t agree more.

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series XlS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Windows on October 31, 2023.
