In the ever ongoing argument about which battle royale title stands superior, each respectively leaves an impact on the industry. While Epic Games’ Fortnite still stands to be the most influential through marketed crossovers and virtual concerts, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds touches many players through its progressing longevity.

According to most recent news, it was revealed that the game will be receiving a name change: PUBG Battlegrounds. Developer Krafton told PC Gamer at the time, “Krafton is actively expanding the PUBG brand through a variety of new experiences set in its universe. Rebranding PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to PUBG: Battlegrounds is the first step in us realizing this vision.”

But in a new statement from Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, the creator for the world-recognized IP is departing to create a new venture. Greene says to be opening a new independent studio in Amsterdam, PlayerUnknown Productions. You can read his statement below:

I’m so very grateful to everyone at PUBG and Krafton for taking a chance on me and for the opportunities they afforded me over the past four years. Today, I’m excited to take the next step on my journey to create the kind of experience I’ve envisaged for years. Again, I’m thankful for everyone at KRAFTON for supporting my plans, and I’ll have more to reveal more about our project at a later date.

Now with Greene officially departing from the brand, it appears that perhaps the choice of a name change for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is to isolate the IP from Greene who founded the name well beyond its official release. However, there is no clear details as to what Greene will be pursuing at the new studio he is forming just yet.

Although it is not certain what the team is to work on first, it should be noted that the team breaking from the battle royale developer is connected to one project, Prologue. While little is known about the title, it has been nearly two years since the game’s announcement back in 2019. You can read the initial announcement by heading here.

Are you surprised by the move by Greene to depart from Krafton?
