For about a month now PUBG Corp has been attempting to sue Epic Games for the similarities between Bluehole’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. Now revealed by Bloomberg that the lawsuit has been dropped.
The lawsuit originated after Bluehole Vice President Chang Han Kim commented on certain elements in Fortnite were akin to those in PUBG. As both are battle royale titles, the basis for the game’s main mechanics fall under the same category. With only the engine truly differentiating the two titles besides other in-game elements such as emotes in Fortnite and vehicles in PUBG.
PUBG Corp has sent a letter of withdrawal to Epic Games earlier this week and the case is now closed. For why this happened wasn’t stated by PUBG Corp or their law firm. Confirming that the suit has ended, but we are left unaware if there was an agreement made or settlement reached for the case.
One reason to guess why the case was dropped is for PUBG running on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. Which is used for Fortnite along with several other popular titles throughout the industry.
For this news coming to be a sudden surprise, we do know that this won’t be the last time we hear the argument of who fathered the battle royale genre. As both titles and others in the mix continue to push the popular game type, it doesn’t seem like this trend will calm down anytime soon as several other games adopt the new game mode. Recently with Battlefield and Call of Duty announcing that their upcoming installments will feature battle royale of some sorts in their titles.
