When it came to discussing the ongoing online first-person shooter and swelling esport that is Rainbow Six Siege, developer Ubisoft Montreal announced that the 2015 title will be receiving support to release on the next generation Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Additionally, the discussion also turned to cross-play for a brief moment, but the team’s ambitions is currently haltered on bring the game to the new systems.

Now in the midst of the upcoming wave of console hardware upon us for later this holiday season, Rainbow Six Siege director Leroy Athanassof sheds some light of the game potentially going free-to-play as well. While not entirely confirming that the game will one day be open for anybody to jump in, he cites that the team would hope to bring the game to that magnitude at some time later on.

“I think on the development team we want that at some point. We want the game to be accessible to everyone,” Athanassof reveals on the team’s agreement of making the game free-to-play. “You need certain features ready to be a good and successful free-to-play game.”

Adding on, Athanassof shares that if the team were to follow through with regulating the game to be a free title, there would be requested countermeasures that would help against frowned upon practices from certain players. For instance, smurfing: the act to own a new account with the intent to reset your progress to play against lower-ranked players online.

As of now, players who own multiple accounts on Rainbow Six Siege will not be penalized for doing so, but Athanassof has made his point across to be against the ethic. Currently, Ubisoft Montreal is working to implement functions which would counteract these action made by immoral players to leave a lesser effect from those who do act upon this manner.

Would you be fine with Rainbow Six Siege going free-to-play?
