After releasing back on Valentine’s Day 2017, developer Rebellion put the Sniper Elite IP on ice whist it worked on other projects like Evil Genius 2: World Domination. However, it was clearly evident that the series will return in some capacity moving forward. In 2019, the team returned with three announcements for the franchise. The first is Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition launching for Nintendo Switch.
The second is a new venture for a growing platform: Sniper Elite VR. From our time with the game, we wrote “Sniper Elite VR is a nice shooter and worthy of the series it came from,” with a 7/10 rating. The third is confirmation a new game is on the way. It was earlier in 2022 that Rebellion properly announced Sniper Elite 5 with a release date slated for this year as well.
Recently the U.K. game studio returned to unveil that the wait for the newest installment is only until this May. You can watch the release date trailer in the video below:
“The latest trailer gives all our well-trained recruits a glimpse of the action-packed storyline and main characters that will feature in Sniper Elite 5 as elite marksman Karl Fairburne uncovers a Nazi plot to turn the tide of the Second World War, codenamed Operation Kraken. Karl has to use all of the skills at his disposal to gather intelligence about the plans and make sure they never come to fruition. This will pit him against the scheme’s mastermind, Abelard Möller, an Axis Obergruppenführer, who must be stopped at any cost.”
Noted, Sniper Elite 5 has also been confirmed for Xbox Game Pass when it launches. The reveal actually dates back to December at The Game Awards with the rebranding for now-PC Game Pass. You can read the full report by heading here.
