Following the first month of its box office debut, Sonic the Hedgehog star James Marsden shared that he would continue to portray the role of Sega’s most iconic character in future projects in the foreseeable future. During an interview with Variety this March, Marsden told the entertainment publication that he signed a multi-film agreement with Universal Pictures to solidify his casting for Sonic the Hedgehog.
It was not too long after that following May that Variety again reported more details on the Sonic the Hedgehog production. This time, the outlet disclosed that the second installment from Universal Pictures has officially begun. In that, it was shared that Director Jim Fowler will be returning alongside producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Asher, and Toru Nakahara to reprise their roles on the production team.
Now in a new report, Variety has revealed that the aforementioned follow-up to this February’s Sonic the Hedgehog has finally received a release date. It is told that the anticipated sequel will arrive in April 2022. Sonic the Hedgehog voice actor Ben Schwartz celebrated the announcement on Twitter:

Further details on the upcoming production was not spared in the report. But that does raise some questions as for how the project will be made. It is presumed the film will be limited already due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic still instated with precautionary measures already established, but more so regarding the animation for the lead role.
It was reported last year that the firm responsible for animating and redesigning Sonic the Hedgehog, Moving Picture Company, its Vancouver branch shut down months prior to the film’s release. You can read the full report by heading here.
