Back in October, the world was rocked in the mobile perspective of gaming as two juggernaut franchises joined the smart phone market: Call of Duty and Mario Kart. While both games were aimed to overtake an influx of new players through its free-to-play business models, it was interesting to see which title would perform better. But following the reception of the first month since both titles released around the same time, Call of Duty: Mobile came out victorious.
In that, it was reported that Tencent Games’ Timi Studios – the team responsible for the mobile approach to the prolific first-person shooter – obtained nearly 150 million installs in its first month. This large margin overtakes Nintendo’s record of installs for Mario Kart Tour which at the time sat at about 17 million downloads within its first month.
However, while the spurt in popularity did not exceed that as in its first month, the install base for Call of Duty: Mobile did not halt. And now eight months following the game’s debut, the mobile title has now exceeded 250 million installations. This new milestone for the game also shares to overtake other big titles that have dominated the market for installs as well in the same duration.
According to Sensor Tower, the outlet shares projected installs for other competing mobile titles that stand against the machine that Call of Duty: Mobile is. And as of this month, the game just steps ahead of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as the battle royale sat about 236 million in its first eight months. Additionally, Epic Games’ Fortnite generated only 78 million in that same time span – which counts roughly a third of what both Call of Duty and PUBG has collected.
Furthermore, Call of Duty: Mobile leads through downloads in the United States with 45 million followed by India then Brazil as second and third place respectively. As for generated revenue, the outlet reports that Call of Duty: Mobile has obtained $327 million since the commencement of the game. It is suggested that the affects of COVID-19 has played a major role in the recent surge of installs for the game with January being the most profitable month for the title this year.
Elsewhere in recent news, it was announced that Timi Studios will also be involved with development for a new Pokemon title, Pokemon Elite. You can read the full report by heading here.
