It has been nearly three years since the announcement of the Gears of War film adaptation under Universal Pictures officially made its way into the public eye, and studio head Rod Ferguson of the coming Gears 5 has revealed more information on the movie. Ferguson in an interview with IGN detailed that the game-to-film translation will be set in an ‘alternate universe’.
According to The Coalition Boss, he believes that the basis for the film’s plot should not be bound to the based game’s storyline and rather be a separate tangent of the canon material fans are familiar with from the initial franchise.
Basically the way that we sort of reconciled that was, we said, ‘oh the movie should be an alternate reality. It should not be dependent on the game story, nor should it influence the game story.’
Ferguson continues on by sharing that the choice will lead for more open opportunities that might not have been possible if tied to the basis of the Gears of War series. “We want people to have the freedom to have new ideas and to take things differently.” Though the main plot will not be a story we are all familiar with, Ferguson does share that iconic elements of the videogame series will be present in the coming motion picture.
What is confirmed for the film’s basis is that the setting is on Sera, the infamous planet that Gears of War is set on. As well as announcing that the main cast will “star certain characters for it to be a meaningful Gears story.” Seeing that no actors have been casted for the film, the only tangible hope for the series protagonist Marcus Fenix could possibly be played by Dave Bautista which he shared his enthusiasm for the role following the film’s reveal.
