Adventure games seem to be making a comeback as of recently. With great new entries in the Tomb Raider series recently and with Uncharted 4 releasing soon, you may be getting an itch to play some more. Adam’s Venture Origins may appear to fit into the same category of those games, but there are many glaring problems with this game. That’s not to say it’s a terrible game, but the cons far outweigh the pros.
Adam Venture is an adventure/puzzle game set in the 1920’s, with a wide assortment of puzzles stumping you as you progress through the story. They progressively get harder as the game goes on, and some really require some thinking which was refreshing to see. The puzzles are definitely the highlight of the game. The gameplay itself is sort of…underwhelming. For an action game, there isn’t much action. Sure, you’ll swing around on some ropes and climb on some ledges, but that’s about it. The game is also very short, and will take you about 4-7 hours depending on how well you can cope with the puzzles. There are no collectibles or anything, so the replayability of this game is nearly nonexistent.
A mix of clunky movements and bugs also detract from the experience, and I’ve encountered countless amounts of them. Audio cutting out, glitching out characters, and a game crash just to name a few. It really ruins the immersion and mixed with it’s slow gameplay, I found myself struggling to complete the game.
Needless to say, the game delivers in the graphical department, with some impressive lighting and texture work. Throughout the game, you will visit a variety of different locations, the majority of them looking pretty impressive. However, the game tends to have frame drops often, and for a game that doesn’t have much action on the screen, it’s quite puzzling as to why.
The game’s Achievements/Trophies are quite simple, all which can be achieved in a single playthrough if you know how to get the simple secret ones. Achievements hunters will definitely like this game, although for it’s price, I’d wait it out until you can find a deal.
