UPDATED FOR DLC

The additions of Deadpool and Venom are most welcome, as they each add a variety of play styles and flavor to combat, and the Abbey itself. The seamless nature of how they fold into the core action and cast is superb, and we hope a full-blown expansion is in the cards.

END OF UPDATE

Marvel is back; this time, it takes the turn-based formula into new territory. One part Persona, one part XCOM, and the classic turn-based combat and flash you expect from Marvel. Three major gameplay components, all working lockstep to give this new franchise a fresh, unique experience great for veterans or newcomers alike.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns take place across the globe, a world under assault by Lilith and her demons connected by the Abbey and your character, the offspring of Lilith.

To say anything more than that would betray one of the best stories in recent Marvel titles. The relationship you will create with your heroes, comprised of X-Men, Avengers, and Runaways, will provide a vast range of stories.

The core structure powering this narrative is unique from previous games. Adopting a format not dissimilar from the kind you would expect in an XCOM title allows for a new take on traditional plot lines. You can walk around the Abbey and interact with heroes. As your bond grows, you will get more action points for activities.

This aspect of the game, being on the ground level not just with your crew but the entire Abbey and all who stay in it, brings care and weight to all of the support systems and dialogue, resembling social links in Persona more than anything.

Combat, the meat of any tactics game, undergoes significant changes. Traditional games usually have predetermined classes for each character to grow with little flexibility. Each hero has several cards that resemble skills that can be leveled via direct combat or training.

It’s a great new spin on the traditional class structure. My version of Iron Man and Wolverine will be completely different than yours, and every player will always feel like they are playing the “right” way.

Bringing all of these elements to life is the production value. Marvel’s Midnight Suns spare no expense with its narrative focus and big bombastic set piece cutscenes. The game’s fantastic visuals keep pace with the superb voice work. One of the most impressive voice ensembles also brings the game’s massive cast to life. Even minor characters have a lot to say, and the journey every character takes is brought to life by each actor.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns significantly change the standard formula, but it has found a way to create something new and fresh in re-inventing itself. A great game for veterans, with some additions to ease a new audience, and one of the turn-based tactical games in a series full of some already.
