Summary

7/10

For fans who grew up with the Rugrats crew, this game is a delightful blast of '90s nostalgia. However, much like a brief episode of the beloved cartoon, the game feels a bit too short, leaving players wanting more of the inventive worlds and endearing characters that made their childhood memorable. Despite its nostalgic charm, the game’s brief duration compared to its price tag feels like getting a Reptar cereal box only to find it half full. The sense of adventure is enjoyable but ends too soon to justify the cost, making it seem like a bit of a rip-off compared to the rich, expansive experiences one might expect from a pricier title. It’s a fun nostalgia trip, but it might leave you wishing for the epic, lasting adventures that made the original show so special.

Prepare to plunge back into a world where diapers, dinosaurs, and daring escapades reign supreme with Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland. From the very first moments, you’ll be swept into an imaginative realm brimming with obstacles, puzzles, and, naturally, the formidable Reptar ready to stir up some chaos.

The adventure kicks off when Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil catch a commercial for the newest Reptar video game. Fueled by their wild imaginations, the babies transform Tommy’s house into a video game extravaganza packed with excitement and adventure. Through their toddler eyes, the mundane becomes extraordinary: the sandbox morphs into a perilous desert, the kitchen fridge turns into a tangled maze of wires and hazards, and the attic becomes a bona fide haunted house.

Your mission is to gather special Reptar coins scattered throughout each stage to unlock a hidden door behind the living room TV, leading to the ultimate game area. The first six stages are open for exploration in any order, and you can switch between the four Rugrats at will. Each character boasts unique abilities reminiscent of those from Super Mario 2: Lil can float briefly like Princess Peach, Chuckie has a longer jump, Phil can jump higher, and Tommy’s special skill seems to involve wielding a screwdriver.

All characters possess a ground pound move, and enemies are typically dispatched with head jumps. The babies can also lift certain objects, like blocks, to build climbable structures. Some foes can be stunned with a head bop, allowing you to pick them up and hurl them—particularly useful during specific boss fights.

Throughout the game, players can seamlessly toggle between nostalgic 8-bit graphics and the vivid detail of HD visuals. Additionally, you can enjoy the adventure solo or team up with a friend for a lively two-player co-op experience.
