Summary
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition embarks on an ambitious yet flawed Souls-Like journey. While the engaging combat system, captivating RPG elements, and impressive aesthetics shine through, they are hindered by a lack of difficulty balance, a rushed narrative conclusion, and notable technical issues. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, marketed as a Souls-Like game, provides players with a multifaceted experience in its touted Complete Edition, blending commendable aspects with notable shortcomings. The game takes a departure from the traditional Souls-Like difficulty, leaning towards accessibility due to its morale system. However, this deviation sets up false expectations, as the initial boss encounter presents an unexpectedly steep challenge, diminishing the satisfaction of subsequent encounters and rendering many bosses forgettable.
Embark on a journey through the shadows in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, a captivating dark fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG crafted by Team NINJA, renowned for their work on the acclaimed Nioh series. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous Later Han Dynasty China in 184 AD, the game weaves a dramatic and action-packed narrative, delving into the chaos and destruction plaguing the land.

The gripping story follows a nameless militia soldier navigating the challenges of a dark fantasy rendition of the Later Han Dynasty infested with demons. Wo Long, the crouching dragon, symbolizes both a yet-to-be-discovered hero and the journey of officers destined for greatness during their ‘unknown’ period. The protagonist’s ascent from obscurity adds depth to the narrative, creating an engaging and immersive experience.
The standout feature of Wo Long is its combat, which revolves around managing “spirit” and encourages an aggressive playstyle, ensuring a dynamic pace. The deflect/parry-based combat system adds depth, making engagements enjoyable regardless of the chosen build. RPG elements, including character customization and a simplified stat system based on the Chinese philosophy of the five phases, contribute positively to the overall experience. However, the narrative, inspired by the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, maintains a captivating pace throughout most of the game but falters towards the end, leaving players with an abrupt and unsatisfying conclusion.

Visually, Wo Long impresses with beautiful graphics and well-executed art direction. The music and sound effects further enhance the immersive experience. However, the game’s technical performance is a considerable letdown, especially for a “Complete Edition.” Persistent PC issues, such as freezing/lock-ups, lag spikes, white flashes, and missing lighting effects, mar the gameplay. These issues are particularly disconcerting given the premium price tag of 69.99€, making the lack of polish unacceptable for a title claiming to be a complete and refined edition.
