Rise Of The Ronin Success For Koei Tecmo Exceeds Nioh, Kickstarts New ‘AAA Studio’ Endeavor

Koei Tecmo, Team Ninja, and Sony Interactive Entertainment have remained compatible partners for years and that trend does not appear to be dying down anytime soon. The most recent effort of this relationship is Rise of the Ronin. Announced back in 2022, the game promised a new souls-like feudal Japan experience. It was in March that the newest title shipped for PlayStation 5.

“Despite its run of the mill open world formula and last generation graphics, Rise of the Ronin’s commendable accessibility options, fascinating historical backdrop, and addictively refined combat allow it to reach an audience far more than Team Ninja’s titles did before, for better or for worse,” Rectify Gaming wrote for its review of the game then.

In a new development from Koei Tecmo, it is revealed that the publisher found overwhelming success for Rise of the Ronin. In fact, so much so that it even outpaced the prior hit series Nioh – a separate PlayStation exclusive IP. In its latest financial earnings, Koei Tecmo frames this “AAA game with a new IP in a new genre” to be its most popular release compared to prior titles.

“Sales are surpassing the ‘Nioh’ series, high valuation by players,” and this new found success is to offer a “significant step towards mid to long-term growth.” One thing worth noting is the new initiative that has been founded from the results for Rise of the Ronin. A new ‘AAA Studio’ organization was created “to consistently launch major titles in the future.” The division has already begun work on a new game.

On the other side of success story for PlayStation 5 exclusives, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth despite its glowing reception remains to be underperforming for the publisher. Enough so that it is revealed a total ¥22.1 billion net loss was recorded for the firm. You can read the full report by heading here.
