From developer WayForward, the team most notable for the Shantae series, in recent years delved into other genres to expand its library of titles moving forward. To grasp the side-scrolling brawler region, River City Girls was born. The game actually stands as a spin-off of the Kunio-kun franchise with Arc System Works publishing the project.
Earlier in 2021, WayForward & Limited Run Games shared that River City Girls will be expanding its horizon with two new games in the forthcoming future. One is River City Girls 2 which is a direct follow-up to the 2019 release whilst River City Girls Zero stands to be a remastering of Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka from the Super Famicom.
Recently, WayForward announced to be shipping River City Girls Zero later this Valentine’s Day. However, this will be a unique release for Nintendo Switch digitally as other platforms can expect the game this coming spring.
Get ready to brawl like it's 1994! River City Girls Zero, the classic 16-bit beat-'em-up, has a digital release date on Switch and it's only a week away – Feb. 14 for both NA and EU! (Look for it on PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC later this spring!) pic.twitter.com/Y5ijyFlcUv

As noted, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox One are expecting digital versions in the approaching months. However, there will likely be physical versions for the game for all systems excluding Xbox due to WayForward’s tie to Limited Run Games, of course.
In recent news from Limited Run Games, the firm announced its plans to open its first retail store this coming April in North Carolina. The project is said for hopes to franchise to the West Coast eventually with even Europe & Japan on its roadmap down the line. You can read the full report by heading here.
