Psyonix has been on a roll with Rocket League as it just passed 1 million physical copies. The physical version of the hit car football game arrived last summer, a year after it was made first available as a digital download. The game was released physically by 505 Games, which has also handled the boxed versions of games such as Terraria and Stardew Valley.
Digital remains the primarily platform for the title. Over 9.5m games have been sold via Steam, PSN and Xbox Live since launch, but its success at physical retail highlights the potential some traditionally ‘digital-only’ titles have in this area of the market.
Psyonix told GamesIndustry.biz that although some of the buyers of the boxed edition are existing fans that want a physical copy, the vast majority are “new gamers”.
“How do we know? Because post-launch we can track new accounts and compare those against both physical and digital sales and the math of it all says that it’s mostly a new audience,” says Psyonix VP of publishing Jeremy Dunham.
This news proves that indie titles can have success at retail and is now something to expect with even more titles moving forward for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
