Rumor: Microsoft is looking to make an Xbox Series X Digital console

Microsoft might be looking into making an Xbox Series X Digital console where the disc drive would be removed. It would be almost exact to what Sony released with the PlayStation 5 having a Digital option at a cheaper price. This rumor comes from Shpeshal Nick where he spoke on the XboxEra Podcast talking about Microsoft’s plans.

“So what I’ve heard is Microsoft are currently looking into a digital only Series X, so no disc drive” said Nick. They also talked about how its been a requested Xbox product from fans and speculated the Series X Digital would be smaller since the disc drive takes up so much space.

You can view the YouTube video where they talk about it here.

Xbox Series X Digital

In 2020 when Microsoft came out with the Xbox Series X, the Series S was made to be the “Series X Digital” which was cheaper and had no disc drive, but it wasn’t as powerful. During the Xbox Games Showcase they announced the 1TB SSD Carbon Black Xbox Series S.

Currently the Xbox Series X is priced at $499.99 USD and if they were to do a digital version of the console it’d probably come at a cheaper cost. The PlayStation 5 Digital released at a price of $399.99 so if this comes true we’d expect the same for a digital only Xbox Series X.

As always take these rumors with a grain of salt. The rumor also shared there’s plans for other hardware in 2025. Could it mean this hardware being talked about will be coming around then? It remains to be seen.

Sony is planning to release a PlayStation 5 Slim in Holiday 2023 and a PlayStation 5 Pro in 2024 rumors suggest. Nintendo is reportedly releasing their next console in the second-half of 2024 as well.
