Earlier on in the spring of this year, news broke out that following the upsetting release of WWE 2K20 – the series would not presume for the next installment later this fall season. Instead, 2K shared that it would expand on the matters of the future for WWE-focused video games in a coming press release. In that, the publisher later revealed that the annual entry of wrestling simulators will not be taking place this year. Instead, the series would take a break as Saber Interactive took the helm for 2020.
So while Visual Concepts gets an additional year to work on the next installment in the WWE 2K franchise, the team responsible for NBA Playgrounds announces WWE Battlegrounds. Holding similar form to its NBA counterpart, Battlegrounds offers comically-sized Superstars and obscene scenarios in action even including alligators. However, the game was only met with a teaser trailer and a fall release window at the time of reveal.
Now in a new press release that was shared this week, 2K alongside Saber Interactive shared that WWE Battlegrounds will ship in September this fall. You can watch the new trailer that was posted alongside the announcement in the video below:
In the press release, it is revealed that WWE Battlegrounds will offer four game modes. Ranging from the traditional exhibition matches and campaign storyline to some unique game types only available in the game. One being gauntlet-structured King of the Battleground where four players will start in each corner of the ring and over time four more wrestlers will be injected into the scene.
Going back onto the spontaneous nature of the game depicted in the trailers, each setting is told to offer explicit stage interactivity based on their theme. Ranging New York, Everglades, Mexico, Scotland, and a military-styled bootcamp, each offers specific activities to spice up each fight. Saber Interactive indulges further by disclosing that roughly 70 Superstars will be available to play in the full version.
Expanding further on the head count, the roster reaches across all WWE generations of fighters including Sgt. Slaughter, Andre the Giant, and Mankind to Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch, and Asuka. Characters are structured into five classes (All-Rounder, Brawler, High-Flyer, Powerhouse, Technician) and different technique is essential to come out on top of each match.
Fans that pre-order WWE Battlegrounds will find Edge available at launch. Those who pay ahead for the Digital Deluxe Edition will receive the aforementioned Superstar alongside Rhonda Rousey, The Rock, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
