Saints Row Team Volition Officially Closes

Although developer Volition has remained fairly active with its current Saints Row reboot in terms of post-launch releases, the firm prior has been fairly quite since the launch of 2017’s Agents of Mayhem. Amid the two games, fans have turned up mixed on both in whether the team has strayed too far from what appealed to Volition games in the first place. After the reveal of Saints Row and the negative response, the team told it would not remold its game based off the complaints.

And following the response of the newest release it was no big surprise where the reception & sales landed. Under the poor tracking for Saints Row, Volition was relocated to Gearbox Entertainment as its new publisher. What doesn’t help is the growing reports of restructuring at THQ Nordic/Embracer Group with efforts to even close down teams as part of the readjustment financially.

And on Thursday, Volition officially bit the dust. In a new statement on the Volition LinkedIn, the team is to effectively close after being active for three decades. “The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We’ve been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight,” it reads.

“This past June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.”

The letterhead continues: “To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.” Amid the team shuttering, it was verified that other big teams such as Crystal Dynamics still remains open.

In our review for Saints Row, we wrote: “The core game, the characters, and the gameplay are all top-notch. It may seem like a throwback to some, but Saints Row provides the perfect blend of story and fun the series desperately needed.” The game is expected to hit PlayStation Plus next month too.
