It was this past October that AiAi finally returned after a half decade hiatus with a complete remaster of 2006’s Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz for modern consoles. While fans did not agree for the choice of title to return, any fragment of the series is better than nothing seeing installments before Sega shelved the line of games.
In celebration of the passing year now seeping into a new decade with 2020, Sega on the official Super Monkey Ball Twitter account wished all their fans and followers a ‘Happy New Year!’ However, what makes this ordinary post newsworthy is the following sentence as Sega discloses to be returning to the series again in some way.
“We look forward to serving you again in the Super Monkey Ball series,” the tweet reads implying something else is planned for the series later on. Regarding what next could be next on the Super Monkey Ball schedule has yet to be confirmed following the post, but a safe bet would be a new game, of course. As for what the follow-up project might be, we had to dig a little bit.
Rewinding back to September prior to the release of Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD, Sega polled fans what they would prefer next if deciding on returning to develop another title. While fans discussed the pros & cons for each of the options, the poll ultimately ended voting for a new installment altogether. While the series has ventured in separate areas by branching off to platforms like the Nintendo DS, PS Vita, and mobile; this new title to shine bright should tread along traditional gaming consoles to appease towards the anticipating fans and take advantage of current hardware.
While on the discussion on Sega, it should be noted that the publisher for Sonic the Hedgehog could also take the same route with an animated series for the franchise as well. Although there is no real backing evidence suggesting Sega to do that, it is not ruled out completely either. Truly just conjecture and will stay as speculation until properly disclosed by Sega themselves.
