When it comes to entertainment, Sega has a stockpile of properties to do so. In a recent announcement back in December, the publisher revealed its new ‘Power Surge’ of reviving beloved IPs for modern systems. This lineup included projects such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and Streets of Rage. Beyond that, transmedia is on the map as well with its recent hiring for a former Disney executive to overlook the endeavor.
Of course, this front has been initiated with the Sonic the Hedgehog films. Latest news conquered the internet with the casting of Keanu Reeves for Shadow the Hedgehog in the new film hitting theaters in December. Additionally, Sega has also opened its ear to more franchises also branching into other mediums, it revealed.
This week, a new announcement from Sega, Comedy Central, and Paramount reveals that Golden Axe is to receive a ten-episode animated series. The show is to star Matthew Rhys (Cocaine Bear, A beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Danny Pudi (Community, Mythic Quest), Lisa Gilroy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), and Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks).
“In a hilarious and loving homage to Sega’s 1989 video game series, ‘Golden Axe’ follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side,” the description for the show reads.
Joe Chandler (American Dad) to pen the first episode alongside Mike McMahan (Solar Opposites) for Golden Axe. Chandler also stands as the showrunner for the animated series. Sega executives Haruki Satomi (CEO, President), Shuji Utsumi (COO), and Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog) are executive producers alongside chandler and Original Film. Titmouse most known for Big Mouth is the animation studio for Golden Axe.
