Sequel For Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Officially Underway

What many presumed to be a dumpster fire while simultaneously also acting as a potential spark for the first actually watchable video game-adapted film, Sonic the Hedgehog was one production followers across the globe were interested to see how it would perform. After its box office debut, the movie was reported to have overtaken the sales of 2019’s Detective Pikachu: another popular video game film that released with similar issues.

What the previous Pokémon film – but more importantly Sonic the Hedgehog was criticized for was the overly realistic rendered models for the characters. Looking at Sega’s mascot, the character swiftly grew infamous for his initial appearance which raged following the reveal trailer for the film. This later lead to the delay of the film and presented the new look we are more familiar with today.

In March, it was reported that actor James Marsden has agreed to work on multiple future projects regarding the film evolving into a series. At the time, it was presumed that a sequel would follow suit, but not trailing follow-ups after the fact. During the initial report, Marsden did not disclose how many projects would be established following the February box office success.

Now in a new report from Variety, the commencement for the second Sonic the Hedgehog film has officially commenced. Universal Pictures alongside Sega have disclosed that Director Jim Fowler alongside Pat Casey & Josh Miller will be returning for the upcoming sequel to pen the script. The film’s producers consist of Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara.

As for executive producers, Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller are posed for the roles. Casting currently is still underway as the two parties shared that it is still in deciding. Regardless of the outcome, it is suspected that James Marsden will be making his return since he already agreed to continue being involved with a full on series.
