Seven Years After Its Announcement, Ubisoft Appoints A New Beyond Good & Evil 2 Creative Director

In recent time, games are facing earlier & earlier announcements; years ahead of its intended release. Ubisoft has actually started a track record for this. It did so with Skull & Bones back in 2017 which it just met its promise releasing the gamer earlier this year. Another example is Beyond Good & Evil 2. Announced again in 2017, the anticipated sequel is still nowhere to be found.

Enough time has pass that Ubisoft actually met its fans with a ‘20th Anniversary Edition’ of the first game earlier this summer. But, the follow-up is in development hell. In 2020, game director Michel Ancel was ejected from his position as controversy surrounded how his leadership was being handled. At the same time, Ubisoft chimed in to say that progress is meeting expectations for the title.

Ancel was succeeded by Emile Morel – developed The Legends of Tintin & Rayman Legends for Ubisoft before passing in 2023. On LinkedIn, Fawzi Mesmar announced he will be the next creative director at Ubisoft Montpellier for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

“Today I’m glad to share that I joined Beyond Good & Evil 2 as Creative Director. I have been working with those peeps for years now on this ambitious game and witnessed their talent firsthand. I am standing on the shoulders of creative giants that have supported the team before me, and I look forward to continuing to craft a game that is truly unique for players to enjoy,” he wrote for the announcement.

In a statement to IGN, Ubisoft comments: “With more than 20 years as an award-winning game designer and creative director, he’s been instrumental in the successful launch of over 20 video games. Mesmar previously collaborated with the Beyond Good & Evil 2 team as VP of Editorial. In his new role, he’s focused on continuing to build upon the vision set forth by our late friend and colleague, Emile Morel.”

Ubisoft Montpellier was in the news recently after discourse surrounded the potential demise of the game studio. But Ubisoft and reliable insiders have identified the team is still functioning with work on three new projects – one being Beyond Good & Evil 2. You can read the full report by heading here.
