Sonic fans for the past few generations have been patient for what might have been the Golden Age of the blue blur’s games when looking at the more recently released installments from Sega. Since Sonic Adventure 2 released back in 1998, there has always been the discussion of when will there be a full trilogy for the adventure battle series, but according to a recent interview with Sonic head Takashi Iizuka, the game might revert to its roots with a full remake.
In the interview with Retro Gamer, Iizuka said the initial Dreamcast title to be “a unique game” following the game’s release two decades ago. The action-platformer offered interactive features that now seem to be spoiling fans when comparing to what we receive in full priced titles today.
Iizuka told the videogame outlet regarding his idea on the 20 year-old title, stating:
“It was the first highspeed 3D action game that also featured a scenario highlighted with six different stories, the A-life Chao, six unique styles of gameplay – it is a unique game offering even 20 years after its release,” Iizuka said to Retro Gamer. “it was the very first 3D game that we worked on and looking at it now I can see the rough edges it has, which really makes me want to remake it again.”
As excited as this makes many fans along with myself that the chances of an upcoming Sonic Adventure title is in the air, there is no solid confirmation that Sega will bring a remake, as of yet. Iizuka stating that he is interested in softening the dents of the 1998 title is a start towards a bright future for the franchise if deciding to commit to it.
Reflecting back on the recently released Sonic Forces, intentions to imitate former games were present from the direction of the story, but gameplay fell flat when attempting to imitate the platformer portion for Sonic’s history. Despite even a pretty nostalgic soundtrack being featured in the 2016 released title, that wasn’t enough to reclaim fans like Sonic Mania achieved.
If Sega doesn’t decide to pull through with a complete remake, all hope isn’t lost completely, at least if you have a Switch. Previously emulation developer M2 revealed that they are steps away from fully emulating nearly the Dreamcast’s entire library on the Nintendo Switch. That includes Sonic Adventure & sequel Sonic Adventure 2.
