It was a couple of months ago at The Game Awards when SEGA first teased Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. At the recent PlayStation State of Play, SEGA gave us a first look at the new Sonic Racing game. The trailer shows us a unique gameplay mechanic transporting the iconic characters from the Sonic and Sega universes into new dimensions.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds introduces Travel Rings, a new gameplay mechanic that makes each race feel surprising and fresh. Travel Rings bring dramatic changes to races, transporting players from one world to a completely new location. The lead racer gets to choose the CrossWorld that all players will be transported to on the second lap, allowing the environments to come alive with various track changes.
During each lap, the track will undergo dramatic changes and comes to life, shifting between land, sea, and air terrains.
Prior to each race, racers will be able to equip and combine Gadgets that give different perks to shake up the race adding more variety to the gameplay. Powerful Gadgets will require more Gadget slots, so players will need to make sure they optimize their collection and increase inventory as they play through the game.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will also include Vehicle Customization and Extreme Gear. This will be the first Sonic Racing game where characters won’t be tied to specific vehicles and can race across a variety of different vehicles.
A release date has not been revealed yet besides that it will release this year. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
