In the realm of video game adaptations, the film industry has yet to truly peak in terms of translating the interactive medium to meet the standards in the theater. However, Paramount Studios could be the first to truly find the right formula which took almost half a century for viewers to be satisfied with Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020. At the time, the debuting film already outperformed against Detective Pikachu (2019) in its opening weekend.
And looking ahead with the additions in the sequel that releases in early April this year, it is expected the second film will be a continuation of the current success. Ahead of the film’s release, it was already confirmed the third movie is underway with a Knuckle’s TV show on Paramount+. A separate report from Giant Freakin Robot told a Tails film feature is also in the pipeline as well.
According to the official Twitter page for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently the “#1 movie in the world.” Additionally, the official account for the game also thanks its users as 30 years after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the titular film also shakes the globe.
From Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis on Twitter, he elaborates on the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. At no surprise, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the largest box office opening for a video game film in U.S. history. More eye opening is that the same motion picture is currently #2 in overall weekend box office behind The Batman.
With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also gaining $10 million more in its opening weekend compared to the predecessor, this movie also breaks a new record for starring antagonist Jim Carrey. In the post, Davis shares that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the biggest opening film for Carrey’s career. The previous film holding that spot was 2003’s Bruce Almighty.
Elaborating more on Carrey’s future, it is reported he could be retiring potentially soon. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Producers Toby Ascher & Neal H. Moritz expressed that the role could not be recasted. The pair are convinced that if Carrey were to retire, Dr, Robotnik would be an exemption for the actor.
